Commentary....

Toss won by Atrenta and elected to Bat first (as expected for Finals)
Arindam and Ajit opened the innings. Gaurav started the first over with wonderful line and length with slight in-cutters to let Atrenta manage to score only a single of their first over.

Subhash started the second over and got Arindam out of his second ball in a short pitch delivery outside off-stump and Arindam trying to cut it and giving a catch at the point bondary (caught by Sanjay). Pressure on Atrenta.

Amit handa comes to bat and hit a six in the same over on a slower ball from Subhash to relieve the pressure a bit.

NEC has a consistent bowling line up and backed up by good fielding to let Atrenta score with an average of 5 an over till the 5th over and then Amit tried to sweep a ball and somehow got the ball hits the stump.

Captain Simranjit comes to the field and played some wonderful shots all around the ground making NEC captain keep his main bowlers in the attack and at the end of 10 overs Atrenta is 59/3.

After the drinks break Simranjit tried to escalate the run rate and in trying to do so took few risky singles along with Vishal till he got run out taking a second run from an over through which should not be called for a run.

Having Simranjit on attack Atrenta was expecting a score of around 150 in their 20 overs but once Simranjit was out- the hope was not that high but still the rest of the batsmen contributed equally and almost everyone of them hit a six to take the score to 140/9 in 20 overs. Quite a nice team effort from Atrenta even against good bowling attack of NEC.

NEC comes to bat with captain along with left handed Piyush to hit some big ones from the very beginning.

Swami makes a wonderful start by giving only 1 run in his first over. Amit comes for bowling the second over and gave two fulltoss to let NEC manage to 9 in 2 overs without loosing a wicket.

After the first 4 overs being bowled by Amit and Swami, they were replaced by Simranjit and Praveen and Simranjit took the first wicket of NEC (Piyush) innings in his very first over. But, Captain Shadab still continued playing with responsibility and started hitting a boundary in each over making 50 in 8 th over. Pressure is again on Atrenta to get some wickets or to lower the run rate.

Ajit comes to bowl the 9th over followed by Arindam on the 10th and they bowled consistently targetting the off stump to let NEC score exacty the same during the drinks break (59) after loosing 2 wickets.

Ajit and Arindam continued after the drinks and target becomes 60 in last 6 overs but they indeed have many batsmen to come but on the other hand Swami and Amit were still having 4 overs out of these 6.

NEC started loosing wickets in regular interval with wonderful bowling from Swami and that backed by good fielding letting NEC to have a target of 29 in their last 2 overs with only 2 wickets in hand. Subhas still managed to hit a six in 19th over making 21 required of last 6 balls with 1 wicket in hand and Swami comes to bowl the last over. He takes the last wicket to give Atrenta their second Sequence Cup Champions title in a row.
It was a wonderful match which either side could have won but at the end , team effort from Atrenta proved too much for the early favourites NEC-HCL .

  8. Well here's a suggestion for the Calypto guys for next year..
Since u have been humiliated, abased, annihilated .. watever by Atrenta, try playing good cricket next time rather than cheap sledging. Also, dont be too selfish for a 50 or watever to runout 5 of your teammates.

  10. Match ka Muzrim for Calypto : Malay 'Hole'dar

The 3-4 captains of calypto did punish him on field by making him run around the park - Changing his fielding position after every 2 balls :-))

At least, this time around we hardly had any on-field sledging unlike last year :) . But I agree, let's not get personal out here.

Did you mean that our Semi-Final match against NEC is going to be our Final one ? :-)

We invite u to see our final.

  20. Sequence succumbed to some good cricket by NEC,
...facing Atrenta would be fun, heard of those guys playing hard too :)

  21. I feel Sad for Sequence :( Shyamal did everything but one man can't play on behalf of other. Every one has to contribute.

For NEC it's more like Sequence Gift.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Very Unfortunate for Sequence. NEC's gamesmanship in convincing the umpires that ball can be called 'dead' after the sequence batsmen had hit a six (for falling of bails at bowler end) was uncalled-for.

It cost sequence the match after they had completly out-played NEC by bowling them out for under 90.

Although I agree, NEC's team is the best and most well balanced of all the 8 teams in this tournament.

  26. Sequence paid the price for being good and sporting organizer by trusting the words of NEC Captain Mr. Shadab.

I was of the opinion (not 100% sure) that the ball (One that was hit for six) was not a dead ball but to avoid controversy Sequence trusted the words of opposition captain as he was most senior cricketer among them.

Now I have verified that "the ball where bails fall at non-striker end was not a dead ball" from cricket rule manual Section 22 and Section 23.

Also have confirmed this from a professional umpire.

I think Sequence was hard-done by this dead ball.

(Also confidence of opposition captain about the (incorrect) rule was uncalled for and seem like it was deliberately done to influence decision making.)

  27. I think the comment above is totally uncalled for.The game was played in a right spirit.A player has a right to appeal and its only upto the umpires to take the decision. So looking at the scenario even if any one has to be blamed, they have to be the umpires not any individual player.I hope everyone agrees to it.

As for Team Sequence, Plz be a good looser.I know its preety hard to loose two in a row but u have lost to a great team and that to giving them a good fight. So plz dont be ashamed of loosing. Its all part of the game.

For Team Atrenta it would be good for you if you can do the talking with bat and ball only.Dont look out for cheap tricks just look out for our flamboyant batsman and deadly bowlers. We gonna crush you !!!!

For Team NEC HCL ST when u see people are talking negative about you then relalise that they are scared of you.The bottomline is WE ROCK !!!!

    ReplyDelete
  28. NEC, You are right, the player has the right to appeal and umpires take decision.
But just as in case of Aussies claiming dropped catches, if it is proved that a player lied while appealing, they are branded CHEATS, even though this has no consequence on the result of the match and umpires can be made the scapegoat for their good intentions of seeking Captains approval. Plain and Simple

    ReplyDelete
  29. I don't know who is writing the comments. Honestly, it's very simple that if the umpires didn't knew much about the exclusive rule, neither did guys at NEC.We were thinking in terms of favourable result, every team playing thinks so & one thing is for sure-WHATEVER would have been the decision of umpire we would have to abide by that, may be in bad taste but it would have been abided & WE WOULD HAVE NOT WRITTEN POST MATCH COMMENTS on the decision!
Whatever comes up may the best team win in FINAL,
    Wish u luck Atrenta!

  30. I think this is a blame game going on here! Firstly, never a umpire is complaint/queried for any wrong decision, and even if that decision which could be a match decision maker. Cricket is always game of uncertainity, every one here had sticked to most controversial decision of the semi-final game between Sequence and NEC-HCL. Both are one of the best teams during whole Sequence cup. Of course, else they wouldn't be in semifinals :) . This platform is created by Sequence organizers to allow all people to share their views either good or bad, either biased or un-biased. But I was most disappointed by the Umpire comment regarding the NEC-HCL captain. In such close game, not only the pressure was on both teams, but also on the on-field umpires, their one good/bad decision had taken the match either way. It's difficult for umpires to swallow and remind all corners rules of cricket, I mean it's not a professional cricket, so, umpires are very near to fair decision and are not perfectly aligned to it. So, To err, is possible in such scenario. And, if any controversial decision had taken and moreover which discovered out as wrong one at the end of match. Then, no blames can be given to umpire, he had taken the best and decision most near to fair play on the point of the match. NOW, if the same umpire is coming out to put off the wrong decision maker tag, and wants to apply it someone other face is ridiculous. If any one has blamed the umpire for being the culprit of the match result then, it's totally unfair to him also. And if the umpire is trying to escape out from this whole matter, by saying that NEC-HCL captain was MOST SENIOR CRICKETER and TO AVOID any more chaos on the field, he has agreed to the knowledge of the winning captain. It's becomes absurd and I think the umpire is somewhere losing the identity of being an UMPIRE(DECISION MAKER) on the ground.

  31. The semifinals have always been crucial.
I hope Atrenta belives in strength and will definately prove with 20 overs cricket rather than one ball easy escape.
Gud guys burn more fire...but don't burn yourself...

  32. Umpires have the final authority in cricket. But this tournament has been a different in a respect that Captains have been given enough say and power for the smooth running of the game. This has been proved by the numerous instances of re-calls during this tournament. So Captains were being expected to be just an extention of Umpires in this tournament since we do not have professional ones for these friendlies.
Unfortunantely, this is where NEC gave more importance to "favourable result" over "fair" one.

Cool, Best of Luck for your FINALS.

  34. NEC, An appeal is fine....
    But you appealed..Umpire overruled..
You then went on to explain to Umpire that a fictious 'dead' ball rule exits...Only then did the Umpire gave 'dead' ball....Does this approach comes under "thinking of favorable result"? ... This is not same as appealing for a caught behing or lbw...
At least don't generelize it and say that "every team playing thinks so"... Because teams with integrity do not resort to every mean possible to win....

Least you could do is admitt that you made a mistake (No one is taking away your Finals berth anyway) of telling the umpire that such a rule exists..and please dont put it in same bracket as appealing...

  35. Nice Team Tee , Sequence.
Next time we should have Team Tees for all participants.

  36. I agree to point that it is duty of umpire to take decision.
I also agree it is NOT the duty of playing captain or any other senior player to assist umpire in making correct decision.
But it has been general trend of tournament to consult captain.
I would like to say that I am not a professional umpire and made a mistake by taking words as a fact of more professional and senior cricketer.

All I am saying that a mistake was made and I am not ONLY guilty party to it.

Is it not correct that rules were wrongly stated at that point?
If one is not sure about the rule why talk so confidently about it?

  42. I think sequence should have walked off from the ground when that was called dead-ball. But Shyamal and Co behaved very well. I am proud of you guys!!! we have seen so many matches and I really dont believe how this was convinced to be a dead ball. Anyways thats past and maybe next time around a rule should be introduced that no way a team can intrude into the umpires decision.
Besides, I think using lines like "plz dont be ashamed of loosing and Plz be a good looser" shows bit too much arrogance. You guys are no Aussies!!!
Maybe you might get the right treatment from Atrenta or from sequence themselves next time.

  43. Rotation criteria in NECHCL team should be applicable for team captain and players (also member of selection committee). Semi-final is a lesson for NECHCL captain.

Some one said absolutely fine NECHCL behaved like Aussies in semi-final.

High spirits to Sequence team for continuing the match in right way.
